PURPOSE:To reproduce half tone securely without spoiling binary-coding processing by selecting one different threshold level in accordance with the level of an image signal to be binary-coded, by referring to a preceding image signal when performing the threshold processing of the image signal. CONSTITUTION:Image information on an original is read by a photosensor 11 and after the amplification of a video amplifier 12, background correction is made by an automatic background correcting circuit 13 to output an image signal which has constant amplitude. This image signal is inputted to the terminal I of a comparator 14, whose output is inputted to the terminal D of a D type FF15; and a sampling pulse is applied to the clock terminal C of the FF15. The output signal of this FF15 is inputted to the amplifier 16 of a threshold generating circuit 17, and the level of the voltage to the comparator is varied with the output voltage of the amplifier 16. Then, one threshold level is selected on the basis of the level of the signal by referring to the precedent image signal to reproduce half tone securely without spoiling the processing of a binary-coded signal.
