Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain titled ion exchange membrane of increased capacity by coating on a base fluoroplastic ion exchange membrane a non-aqueous dispersion prepared by substituting a hydrophilic organic solvent for the aqueous medium of a specific acid-type fluorinated polymer dispersion.
CONSTITUTION: (A) A fluorinated ethylenic unsaturated monomer such as tetrafluoroethylene and (B) a polymerizable monomer having acid-type functional group (e.g., a compound of the formula) are copolymerized, in an aqueous medium, by the action of an initiator to effect an aqueous dispersion of an acid-type fluoropolymer containing 5W40mol% of the component (B). The aqueous medium of the dispersion is then substituted by a hydrophilic organic solvent without degrading the dispersed condition to obtain a non-aqueous dispersion of said polymer. The resulting dispersion is coated on a base fluoroplastic ion exchange membrane followed by expelling the solvent to accomplish composite film formation, thus obtaining the objective ion exchange membrane.
