Abstract

PURPOSE: To effect significant reduction of the free resorcinol content in a resorcinol resin without degrading its properties by treating said resin with a compound having aromatic ring which carries both phenolic hydroxyl-and carbonyl groups.
CONSTITUTION: (A) a resorcinol resin obtained by the reaction, for example, between resorcinol and formaldehyde and (B) a comound having aromatic ring which carries both phenolic hydroxyl- and carbonyl-groups (e.g., o-hydroxybenzaldehyde) are brought into contact preferably at ≥70°C to reduce the free resorcinol content in the resin. The amount of the compound (B) is preferably 1W2 molar times as much as that of the free resorcinol. Furthermore, prior to the treatment by the compound (B), it is recommended to lower the content to a minimum by conventional means, etc.
