PURPOSE:To shorten the response time of the drawing speed of an optical fiber to the feeding speed of preform, and to reduce the amount of waste optical fiber, by quickly changing the position of the preform relative to the heating heater, thereby controlling the feeding speed of the preform. CONSTITUTION:The preform feeding device 11 is composed of the main feeding device 12 and the subsidiary feeding device 13. The main feeding device shifts the preform 2 at a stationary speed Vp, while the subsidiary feeding device 13 moves the preform 2 vertically at a speed more than several times the speed given by the main device 12. At the initial stage of drawing, the preform is fed at a speed higher than the stationary feeding speed Vp by operating the subsidiary feeding device 13. Corresponding to the above, the drawing speed with the winder is also accelerated, and the point of drawing X of the preform in the heater 3 is shifted by X1. When the production of the product becomes stationary state, the feeding speed of the preform is returned to the stationary level Vp using the main feeding device, and the point of drawing of the preform in the heater 3 is shifted to X2. By this procedure, the time necessary to get stationary product can be shortened, and the amount of waste optical fiber is reduced.
