Abstract

PURPOSE: After it is previously treated with heat, low-quality silica rock containing components to become suspensoid is digested in an autoclave together with a caustic alkali to produce high-purity alkali silicate through a wet process, even when silica rock with impurities is used as a starting material.
CONSTITUTION: A silica rock containing 1W10wt% impurities in the form of oxides or sulfides of Al, Mg or other metallic elements is first calcined at 200W 1,500°C for 1W10hr where the particle size of the silica rock is suitably about 4,000 microns, preferably 100W1,000 microns. Then, the resultant silica rock powder is digested together with a caustic alkali in an autoclave at 3W30kg/cm2 and 130W240°C for 1W10hr. Resultingly, sodium silicate of 2.0W3.0 SiO2/Na2O is botained in 80W95% reaction rate and the suspensoid taken into the product can be lowered to about 0W10 ppm.
