Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain in high yield the titled compound useful as a raw material for synthesizing various kinds of compounds, by introducing bromine gas into a solution of 3-methylchrotonic acid in n-heptane under irradiation of light so that the ester is brominated.
CONSTITUTION: A 3-methylchrotonic acid ester shown by the formulaI(R is 1W 4C alkyl) is dissolved in n-heptane, bromine gas is introduced to the solution under irradiation of light, to give a 4-bromo-3-methylchrotonic acid ester shown by the formula II. The reaction temperature is preferably about the boiling point (98.35°C) of n-heptane. The compound shown by the formula II is obtained in high yield with a very small amount of formed 4-bromo-3-bromomethylchrotonic acid ester, 2,3-dibromo-3-methylchrotonic acid ester by-products. The compound shown by the formula II is useful as an intermediate for synthesizing a polyprenylcarboxylate, etc.
