PURPOSE:To prevent a base material from containing water and to inhibit a low m.p. substance from volatilizing by melting the growing end of a base material for an optical fiber by heating with no flame, depositing powdered starting material on the growing end, and melting it to grow the base material. CONSTITUTION:A heating zone 10 is formed in a tightly sealed container 1 with a heater 8 using no flame, and a base material supporting table 4 is set at the zone 10 and rotated with a rotary shaft 5. Powdered starting material 9 in a starting material feeder 6 is dropped onto the table 4 through a feed pipe 7. The dropped material 9 deposits on the table 4 and is converted into transparent glass by heating to form a base material 11 for an optical fiber, and the top of the material 11 becomes a growing end 12. Powdered material 9 deposits continuously on the end 12, it is simultaneously converted into transparent glass, and the material 11 is grown in the form of the rod. The table 6 lowers in accordance with the growing speed. As the heater 8 an electric heating furnace, laser beams or the like is used, and it is preferable to form an inert gaseous atmosphere.
