Abstract

PURPOSE:To make possible the detection of a foreign object entering a monitoring area even when the object has the same reflection efficiency as that of a reflector plate by a method wherein a light signal from a light emitting unit is received by two of light receiving units. CONSTITUTION:A light sending and receiving device 10 has light emitting units 110-119 and light receiving units 120-1210 arranged one after another, and faces a reflector 13 provided with a reflector plate 13a used to reflect incident light beams in the roughly some directin via the operating unit of a press. Light emission bodies 110-119 each emits a pair of light signals l1 and l2, l3 and l4... l19 and l20. The light signal involved is reflected by the reflector plate 13a and received by the light receiving units 120 and 121, 121 and 122... or 129 and 1210 in order to form a monitoring region 14. By so constructing the device, when a foreign object with the same relection efficiency as that of the reflector plate 13a enters the monitoring region 14, the light of the foreign object is not received by the pair of light receiving units and is judged as a foreign object because it is not supposed to reflect light in the same direction against the incident light like the reflector plate 13a.
