Abstract

PURPOSE:To detect gas concn. with a small size and high sensitivity without the danger of gas explosion or the like by connecting a high voltage electric power source of variable voltages to an air counter tube, measuring the electric discharge start voltage of the counter tube and determining the concns. of the combustible gases included in the atmospheric air from the value thereof. CONSTITUTION:Electric current of about several KV, 10<-12>A is applied via a resistance from a high voltage electric power source 4 to an air counter tube 1 consisting of cathode 2 of a cylindrical metal of about 10mm. diameter and 50mm. length and anode 3 such as W wire of about 0.05mm. diameter. The voltage of the power source 4 is so controlled by a voltage regulator 5 as to maintain the count value of the counter tube constant. The electric discharge pulses generated in the tube 1 are amplified and shaped by an amplifier 6 and a waveform shaper 7, and these signals operate an electric discharge suppressor 8. The device 8 is connected to the cathode 2 of the tube 1. The discharge pulse signals are converted of count rates to voltage or current values with a rate meter 9, and these are compared with a reference voltage or current value in the comparator incorporated in the regulator 5 and the regulator 5 is so limited that always the reference value is attained. The discharge start voltage of the tube 1 changes by about 100V with respect to a 1vol% change in gas concn. In this way, the gas concns. are measured with good accuracy.
