Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled substance in high yield, and to enable the easy recovery and reuse of the Pd used as a catalyst, by carrying out the liquid-phase oxidation of xylene and acetic acid with oxygen in the presence of a catalyst composed of Pd supported by activated charcoal, an alkali metal compound, and a Co, Ni or Sn compound.
CONSTITUTION: In the preration of the titled substance by the liquid-phase oxidation of xylene and aceitc acid with molecular oxygen, the reaction is carried out in the presence of a catalyst composed of (A) Pd supported by activated charcoal, (B) an alkali metal compound, and (C) two or more compounds selected from Co, Ni and Sn compounds. The support of Pd on activated charcoal is essential. The components (B) and (C) may be supported together with Pd on the activated charcoal or dispersed in the reaction liquid. In the latter case, the components should be used in the form of acetate, and its amount is pref. 5W 30wt% of the component (A).
USE: Intermediate of perfume, solvent, and industrial chemicals.
