Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an exothermic composition capable of generating heat to a high temperature only when coming into contact with air merely without the necessity for charging water from outside and also incapable of emitting harmful gases, from an alkali metal sulfide, a carbonaceous substance, a metal nitrate, etc.
CONSTITUTION: An exothermic substance is obtained by mixing (A) 5W50wt% an alkali metal (poly)sulfide or its hydrate salt (e.g., Na2S.3H2O), (B) 5W50wt% a carbonaceous substance serving as a catalyst (e.g., carbon black), (C) 1W50wt% a metal nitrate (e.g., KNO3, etc.), and, if necessary, (D) calcium oxide and (E) a metal (alloy) (e.g., Fe, Al, Mg etc.) are blended in an atmosphere of an inert gas (e.g., N2), and then the exothermic substance thus obtained is airtightly enclosed in an oxygen impervious package for storage. When being used, a hole is bored in the package by using a needle to cause these components to come into contact with the air, thereby permitting it to generate heat.
