Abstract

PURPOSE: To raise the temp. of brine so as to reduce the consumption of electric power for the electrolysis in the electrolysis of brine, by allowing the high temp. chlorine gas produced by the electrolysis to contact with raw material brine in a direct contact type heat exchanger which is practically integrated with the electrolytic cell in one body.
CONSTITUTION: In the manufacture of gaseous chlorine and NaOH by the electrolysis of brine in many electrolytic cells 1, a direct contact type heat exchanger 2 is either directly connected to each electrolytic cell 1, or connected through a short connecting tube 5. Raw material brine is charged to the electrolytic cell through a feed pipe 3 and the heat exchanger 2. The brine is heated from about 45°C to about 70°C in the heat exchanger 2 by gaseous chlorine at about 90°C released from the electrolytic cell 1, and enters the cell 1, hence the electric resistance in the cell is lowered, hereby the consumption of electric power for electrolysis is reduced. The gaseous chlorine is cooled to about 75°C and is discharged through a take-out pipe 4 of the heat exchanger 2.
