Abstract

PURPOSE: To maintain field intensity at a sufficiently large value despite the increase in dust resistance by using a helical electrode for at least one of discharge electrodes and generating a pulse voltage of 1nsW10ms pulse widths from a pulse voltage excitation power source.
CONSTITUTION: DC high voltage is applied at all times between discharge electrodes 7 and dust collecting electrodes 6 by a DC power source 11, whereby a main electric field is formed. If, on the other hand, the pulse voltage of 1nsW10ms pulse width is applied between the helical electrodes 7a and 7b, pulselike corona discharge is generated, and cylindrical plasma is generated around the discharge electrodes 7. The negative ions generated by these are drawn out by the main electric field and are emitted toward the dust collecting electrodes 6 which are of positive polarity. In this process, the particles in the main electric field are impinged and charged by the ions, and stick on the dust collecting electrodes 6.
