Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a composite membrane which has excellent water resistance, permeability, strength, etc. and is useful as a dialysis membrane for an artificial kidney, by a method wherein a water-soluble high-molecular membrane is formed on a hydrophobic porous substrate, and the membrane is treated by the irradiation of glow discharge plasma to gel it.
CONSTITUTION: A hydrophobic porous substrate composed of a woven fabric, a ceramic or a hydrophobic high-molecular compd. such as polytetrafluoroethylene, polyethylene, polystyrene or polypropylene, is subjected to a plasma treatment to make the surface thereof hydrophilic. The surface of the above substrate is coated with an aq. soln. of a water-soluble high-molecular compd. such as polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinylpyrrolidone or polyethylene glycol, and then dried to form a water- soluble high-molecular membrane. Then the water-soluble high-molecular membrane is subjected to a glow discharge plasma treatment to gel it, whereby the desired composite membrane is obtd. This composite membrane is not only useful as a membrane material for dialysis or adsorption, but also has many uses.
