Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce a polyester having a high polymn. degree and excellent color tone in a short time, by a method wherein terephthalic acid or a bifunctional carboxylic acid (ester-forming derivative) consisting mainly of terephthalic acid is reacted with ethylene glycol in the presence of specified catalysts.
CONSTITUTION: Terephthalic acid or a bifunctional carboxylic acid (ester-forming derivative) consisting mainly of terephthalic acid is polycondensated with ethylene glycol or a glycol consisting mainly of ethylene glycol in the presence of at least one glycol-soluble cpd. (A) selected from cpd. of Sb, Ti, Ge, Sn, Zn and Co as a catalyst in an amount of 0.5×10-4W10×10-4mol of the cpd. (A) per mole of the acid and also in the presence of a glycol-soluble Re cpd. (B) (e.g. rhenium chloride, rhenic acid) as a catalyst in an amount of 0.005×10-4W0.1×10-4mol of the Re cpd. (B) per mole of the acid at an elevated temperature and under highly reduced pressure.
