Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain in good yield, titled nitrocellulose solution, which nequires a reduced amount of solvents when used for a paint etc., by the thermal depolymerization of a solution of a nitrocellulose product wetted with alcohols, water, etc. in an organic solvent, in the presence of H2O2.
CONSTITUTION: A nitrocellulose such as of industrial use, is wetted with not more than about 50wt%, based on the resulting wetted product, of a wetting agent such as alcohols and/or water, and the wetted nitrocellulose is dissolved in such an amount of an organic solvent such as ethyl acetate or acetone, that the resulting solution contains not more than about 50wt% of the nitrocellulose. Then title nitrocellulose is obtained, by the depolymerization of the solution by heating it at the boiling temperature of the solvent or lower temperatures under normal pressure, or by heating it in a pressure vessel, at the boiling temperature or higher temperatures, with addition of about 0.5W20wt%, based on the nitrocellulose in the solution, of H2O2.
