Abstract

PURPOSE: To detect double feeds of a document accurately by detecting the quantity of light transpierced through a document fed into a document reader and by comparing it with the previously stored quantity of transpierced light.
CONSTITUTION: The quantity of light transpierced through one document fed out of a hopper part is detected by detector 1 and then stored in memory circuit 4 via amplifier 2 and A/D converter 3. Next, documents fed out of the hopper part successively are read and the quantities of transpierced light detected during the read are compared with the output of memory circuit 4 by comparing circuit 5, whose comparison results are discriminated by discriminating circuit 6 to detect double feed. Thus, actually used detector 1, amplifier 2 and A/D converter 3 are used, so that any detection miss due to character deteriorations of them do not occur with regard to the memory contents of memory circuit 4. Therefore, the double feed is detected with accuracy.
