Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare an arylacetic acid useful as an intermediate for a perfume industrially and advantageously, by reacting an aromatic aldehyde with carbon monoxide and water in the presence of a rhodium catalyst and a specific amount of hydrogen iodide.
CONSTITUTION: An aromatic aldehyde of formula I (X1 is H or CH3; X2 is H or 1W5C alkyl, 1W5C alkoxyl, F or Cl), preferably p-tolualdehyde, is reacted with carbon monoxide and water in the presence of rhodium or a compound thereof and hydrogen iodide or a compound capable of forming hydrogen iodide in the reaction at an atomic ratio or molar ratio of 1W10 based on the metal or a compound thereof to give an arylacetic acid of formula II in one stage in high yield readily and industrially. The reaction is preferably carried out in a reactor whose inner surface is protected with glass lining or a corrosion-resistant material.
