Abstract

PURPOSE: To recover a mercaptan in high yield by oxidizing an alkyl aromatic compound in the liquid phase in the presence of a mercaptan as a catalyst, distilling off a phenol, etc. from the resultant oxidation reaction mixture, hydrogenating the distillation residue, and distilling the hydrogenated residue.
CONSTITUTION: An alkyl aromatic compound, e.g. p-cymene, is oxidized with molecular oxygen in the liquid phase in an organic solvent, e.g. acetic acid, in the presence of a mercaptan having an acid dissociation constant less than 7.8, at 50W 80°C and atmospheric pressure. A phenol or a fraction having a lower boiling point than the phenol is distilled from the resultant oxidation reaction mixture, and the distillation residue is then hydrogenated in the presence of a metal sulfide, e.g. cobalt sulfide, alone or supported on a carrier, as a catalyst, at 120W250°C and a hydrogen pressure of 2W50kg/cm2. The hydrogenated residue is distilled at 150°C or below and 90mmHg or below, to recover the mercaptan in high yield, which may be reused in the oxidation reaction.
