Abstract

PURPOSE: To decompose org. matter efficiently and economically in a methane fermentation method, by adding slaked lime or calcium carbonate to sewage to control its pH then recovering this alkali control material.
CONSTITUTION: At the time of treating sewage sludge, night soil, etc. by a methane fermentation method, slaked lime and/or calcium carbonate is used as an alkali control material to control the pH in the fermentation system, whereby org. acid fermentation is accomplished efficiently. Thence, if this org. acid fermentation liquid contg. calcium salt is fermented, the calcium salt of org. acids is changed to calcium bicarbonate by the carbon dioxide produced by methane formation. The supernatant liquid after separation of suspended solids from the methane fermentation liquid is aerated to allow excess carbon dioxide to release into the atmosphere and allow calcium carbonate to depostie. This calcium carbonate is separated and recovered. In this way, the methane fermentation is performed at low cost through recovery and reuse of chemicals.
