Abstract

PURPOSE: To constitute a device simply on the whole even if a sheet is long by performing 90° conversion in phase after segmenting, character by character, a bit pattern obtained by photoelectrically converting one line of characters perpendicular to a sheet feed direction.
CONSTITUTION: A sheet is carried in the direction where many pieces of character information are arranged and the 1st line of character group perpendicular to the paper feed direction is photoelectrically converted into a bit pattern, which is stored in buffer memory 5. The bit pattern information in circuit 5 is segmented circuit 6, whose output is phase-converted by 90° at 90° phase converting circuit 7 before being stored in pattern memory circuit 8. While the character stored in circuit 8 is recognized by recognizing circuit 9, the next character in the same line is segmented by circuit 6 with code 10, phase-converted by 90° at circuit 7 and stored in circuit 8. Similarly, the character group in the 2nd line is processed after the recognition of te character group in the 1st line.
