Abstract

PURPOSE:To manufacture a cylinder liner, which is hardly corroded by cavitation erosion, by irradiating heat beam on the external peripheral surface of a cylinder liner to form thin hardened film. CONSTITUTION:A cylinder liner 1 is moved while rotating. Heat beam 3 such as electron beam or laser beam is irradiated on the external peripheral surface of the cylinder liner 1 from an energy gun 2 arranged at a position a prescribed distance apart from the cylinder liner 1. Hence a hardened layer 4 is formed by continuous repetition of melting and solidification of the external peripheral surface of the cylinder liner 1. The hardened layer 4 is about from several mu to several tens mu in thickness. This method forms hardened layer 4 on the external peripheral surface of the cylinder liner 1, as a result, corrosion such as cavitation erosion is prevented thereby manufacturing inexpensive products of high quality.
