Abstract

PURPOSE: To detect whether penetration reaches a position required or not by a method wherein ultrasonic wave beam is projected to a required position of a butt portion of metal in welding and existence of a level or reflection waves of the ultrasonic wave beam from this position is detected.
CONSTITUTION: When penetration does not reach a point P1, an ultrasonic wave beam proceeding to the point P1 from a signal transmitter 3 is reflected, because a slight gap remains at the end face of a butt part 11 of both steel plates 1, 1 at the point P1, and it is also reflected at the rear face of the steel plate 1 and further, it proceeds toward a signal receiver 6 to be received by the signal receiver 6. Namely, when a receiving signal is received at the ultrasonic wave receiving circuit 7, it is discriminated that penetration does reach the point P1.
