Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the quantity of oil to be required and reduce the stroke of an operating member and its operating force, by providing two mutually-independent pressure chambers between a brake cylinder and piston. CONSTITUTION:When a brake pedal (not shown) is actuated, the pressure in a pressure-generating chamber 17 in a master cylinder 15 increases. At the same time, the pressure in the first pressure chamber 11 of a wheel cylinder 1 communicated to the master cylinder 15 through a line 43 increases, thereby advancing a piston 8 and urging pads 3, 4 against a disc 2 to eliminate the brake clearance. Due to the advance of the piston 8, a negative pressure occurs in the second pressure chamber 12 and oil in a reservoir 18 is sucked into the second pressure chamber 12 through a line 45. When the pads 3, 4 are brought into contact with the disc 2, the pressure in the first oil flow path 34 is raised, thereby opening a poppet valve 28 and causing pressureized oil to flow into the second pressure chamber 12 through the second oil flow path 37. Thus, the exactly same operating force as available with conventional oil cylinders can be obtained.
