Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:The titled compound of formula I (R is 1W4C lower alkyl).
EXAMPLE: 1, 2-Di( ethoxycarbonylmethylamino )ethylene-1, 2-diphosphonic acid phenyl ester.
USE: Herbicide useful for the control of plants which suppress the growth of crops or damage the natural environment. It has excellent nonselective herbicidal effect by foliar treatment after sprouting of weeds, however, there is utterly no herbicidal activity by the soil treatment before emergence of weeds.
PROCESS: The compound of formula I is prepared by (1) reacting glyoxal with a glycyl ester of formula II usually at 0°C to room temperature, (2) extracting the reaction product with a solvent insoluble in water, (3) removing the solvent from the extract, (4) adding diphenyl phosphite of formula III and an ether solution of boron trifluoride as a catalyst to the residue obtained by the step (3), and (5) carrying out the reaction under heating and stirring in the absence of a solvent.
