Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a comound useful as an intermediate for medicines of a modifier for polymers, e.g. polycarbonate, etc., and simultaneously another compound useful as an intermediate for medicines, etc., by the reaction of glyoxylic acid with a phenol at a specific ratio, in the presence of a mineral acid.
CONSTITUTION: Glyoxylic acid is reacted with a phenol expressed by formula I (R1 and R2 are Hs, halogens, alkyls or alkoxyls), in an amount less than 2mol, preferably 0.8W1.5mol based on 1mol of the glyoxylic acid, in the presence of a mineral acid, preferably sulfuric acid, in an amount less than 0.5mol, preferably 0.1W 0.45mol, based on 1mol of the glyoxylic acid at a temperature of 80°C, or below preferably 45W75°C, to give two compounds expressed by formulas II and III simultaneously. The production ratio of the compound expressed by formula II may be increased by increasing the amount of the mineral acid to be used or the reaction temperature or by adding a small amount of an aliphatic carboxylic acid, e.g. acetic acid, to the reaction system.
