Abstract

PURPOSE:To correctly detect the surface of molten glass in a glass melting furnace by providing the furnace with a molten glass surface detecting device consisting of a light irradiator for irradiating light to the surface and a photodetector for receiving the reflected light and detecting the height of the surface. CONSTITUTION:The glass melting furnace is composed essentially of furnace body 1 and heating mechanism 5 for melting glass (a) in body 1. The furnace is provided with molten glass surface detecting device 8 consisting of light irradiator 9 for irradiating light to the surface of molten glass (a) at a predetermined incidence angle and photodetector 10 for receiving the reflected light and detecting the neight of the surface on the basis of the light receiving position. Since device 8 can be set at a position away from the surface of hot molten glass (a), it can be prevented from being exposed to high temp. to facilitate the maintenance and inspection as well as enhance the endurance.
