Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain single-celled green algae rich in photosynthetic pigment, by the heterotrophic cultivation of the algae in an inorganic medium containing an organic material as a carbon source under controlled dissolved oxygen concentration.
CONSTITUTION: Single-celled green algae are cultured in a medium containing an organic carbon source such as glucose, fructose, sucrose, etc. and nutrient components such as a nitrogen source e.g. an NH4 salt, nitrate, etc., a potassium salt, a magnesium salt, etc., and having a dissolved oxygen concentration controlled to 1.8W6ppm. Single-celled green algae having high photosynthetic pigment content can be prepared by this culturing process. The single-celled green algae of the present invention are those which can assimilate organic materials and proliferate heterotrophically, such as Chlorella, Scenedesmus, Chlamydomonas, etc.
