Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain 2,6-dimethylphenol in high yield, by distillating a reaction product of phenol and methanol in vapor phase contact at the temperature of the bottom of distillation column in a specific range, and by removing 0-cresol in sufficiently high concentration with preventing the change in quality of the reaction product.
CONSTITUTION: A reaction product obtained by subjecting phenol and methanol to vapor phase contact reaction in the presence of a caralyst containing a metallic oxide is distilled and separated by a distillation column having a still at the temperature of the bottom of the distillation column not exceeding 220°C even partly, or by 2 or 3 distillation columns of one (1) wherein the reaction product is directly fed and distilled, a distillation column (2) which distills the distillate of the distillation column (1) and/or one (3) which distills the bottom product of the distillation column (1), to give reaction products liquid at normal temperature, wherein 2,6-dimethylphenol is separated from low-boiling or high-boiling ingredients, to give high-purity 2, 6-dimethylphenol useful as a raw material for a heat-resistant snythetic resin.
