Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve the yield of deposition of glass soot by controlling the amount of diametral spreading of the flame of a concentrical multitube burner and controlling the amount of spreading of the dopants in the flame. CONSTITUTION:At the time of producing a focusing type otpical fiber base material by deposting glass soot on a target 2 by the use of a concentrical multitube burner 1, a protecting pipe 7 protecting the flame is provided on the outside circumference of the burner. The protecting pipe is so arranged that it can be moved in the axial direction 9 of the flame by a power transmission device 8. Unless there is the protecting pipe 7, the position of the glass deposition surface assumes an optimum focusing type distribution at l1 from the burner nozzle outlet part, but if the protecting pipe 7 is provided, the glass deposition surface forming the optimum focusing type distribution comes to the position of l1+l2, longer by l2 in the axial direction of the flame. As a result, the glass soot scattering by colliding against the target 2 decreases and the yield of deposition of the glass soot improves. In some cases, the protecting pipe is expanded of its diameter in a taper shape toward the producing direction of the flame.
