Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce an adsorbent for sulfur oxide without the use of steam by a method wherein semicoke is used to adsorb sulfuric acid and is activated by heating.
CONSTITUTION: Coal is charged in a dry distillation still 24, and is heated to remove volatiles to produce semicoke. A part of the semicoke is impregnated with sulfuric acid in a sulfuric acid impregnation column 32. The sulfuric acid-adsorbed semicoke is heated in a activation equipment 36 so that part of carbon in the semicoke is gasified and activated, thereby producing an adsorbent for sulfur oxide. The process thus efficiently provides a high-performance adsorbent without the use of steam.
