Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain in infrared ray transmitting body of high mechanical strength and small light transmission losses by forming the optical path part by a single crystal fiber of fluoride of >=15.5 in reduced mass and providing an organic film of a refractive index lower than that of said fluoride on the surface thereof. CONSTITUTION:Strontium fluoride, barium fluoride, lead fluoride or bismuth fluoride may be used for the fluoride of >=15.5 in reduced mass. For example, a fibrous single crystal of about 0.3mm. diameter is grown by a pulling method from the melt of, for example, barium fluoride, and before it contacts the take-up roll, paraffin or hydrocarbon such as polyolefin is coated on the surface thereof and is dried. This infrared ray transmitting body will not break when taken up, is high in mechanical strength and can transmit infrared rays such as CO2 laser light with less transmission losses.
