In this set-up, when the short- circuit detection circuit 13 detects a short-circuit during discharge machining to a work 1 by a wire electrode 2, movement stop of the work 1 and voltage shut-off are effected and at the same time the work 1 is progressively moved in the X direction and moved in circle and the wire electrode 2 makes arc movement. During this movement coordinate values (values relative to the work 1) of the wire electrode 2 is read and accumulated. Further, number of readings is counted to calculate mean coordinate value of short circuit release points. Based on a calculated mean value, the work 1 and wire electrode 2 are moved to a mean coordinate value to be released completely from the short-circuit. Accordingly a resistor for memory of the passage of the wire electrode 2 one by one is not necessary.
