Abstract

PURPOSE: To readily produce a highly water-absorptive resin, by crosslinking with a polyepoxy compound, the reaction product obtained by reacting a maleic anhydride copolymer with an alkaline material.
CONSTITUTION: A maleic anhydride type copolymer comprising maleic anhydride and an α-olefin such as isobutylene or a vinyl compound such as methyl vinyl ether is reacted with an alkaline material such as sodium hydroxide or ammonia thereby to form a reaction product. Then, 100pts.wt. of said reaction product (hydrophilic maleic anhydride type copolymer rendered hydrophilic) is reacted and crosslinked with about 0.5W4.8pts.wt. of a polyepoxide compound thereby to form a water- absorptive resin having a degree of water absorption of 50W500 times. As said epoxy compound, one having an epoxy eq. of about 10W500, such as glycerin diglycidyl ether is preferred.
