Abstract
PURPOSE: 1,1-Diarylethane is thermally decomposed in gas phase in the presence of a catalyst of inoganic acid or organic sulfonic acid to produce the titled compound in high yield, which is used as a starting material for various kinds of plastics and for fine chemicals such as agricultural chemicals.
CONSTITUTION: The thermal decomposition of 1,1-diarylethane of formula I (R1W6 are H, methyl) such as 1,1-ditolylethane in the presence of a catalyst of inorganic acid or organic sulfonic acid is effected in vapor phase under normal pressure or elevated pressure, preferably at 400W600°C at a space velocity of the reaction gas of 1,000W2,000hr-1 to produce styrene or benzene nucleus-substituted styrene. The inorganic acid or organic sulfonic acid is, e.g., phosphoric acid such as orthophosphoric acid, sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, p-toluenesulfonic acid and the amount is 0.01W100, preferably 0.05W10 times the molar quantity of the compound of formula I.
