Abstract
PURPOSE:To enable the required amount of the electrolyte of a battery to be reduced and the height of the battery to be small, by employing a separator whose fringe is reduced in porosity by pressing it. CONSTITUTION:The fringe of a separator 7 of a battery is reduced in its porosity by pressing it. For instance, polypropylene nonwoven-cloth with a thickness of 0.3mm., an apparent weight of 50/m<2> and a porosity of 70% is used to make a separator, which is impregnated with a nonaqueous electrolyte of one molar solution of lithium perchlorate dissolved in a mixture of equal amounts of propylene carbonate and dimethoxyethane; only the fringe of the separator is pressed for the purpose of reducing its porosity to several percent and the thickness to 0.1mm.. Consequently, the height of the battery is reduced, and at the same time, the required amount of the electrolyte can be reduced since unnecessary electrolyte will not be retained around the fringe of the separator.
