Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a 2-halogeno-5-trifluoromethyl-pyridine useful as an intermediate of herbicide, without leaving solid residue, by reacting 2-chloro-5-trichloromethyl-pyridine with hydrogen fluoride in the presence of a solid catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: 2-Fluoro- or 2-chloro-5-trifluoromethyl-pyridine is prepared by reacting (A) 2-chloro-5-trichloromethyl-pyridine (1mol) with (B) hydrogen fluoride (3W30mol) in the presence of (C) a solid fluorinating catalyst at 250W400°C. The fluorinating catalyst is pref. aluminum fluoride, chromium (III) oxyfluoride or their mixture, or chromium (III) oxyfluoride supported on aluminum fluoride. The reaction is pref. carried out by introducing the (A) component as a solution in hydrogen fluoride or an inert solvent into the reaction zone.
