Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for the synthesis of an agricultural or industrial chemical in high yield and purity with a high selectivity in simplified steps only through simple distillation, by chlorinating p-toluenesulfonyl chloride while controlling the reaction temperature.
CONSTITUTION: p-Toluenesulfonyl chloride of formula I is chlorinated at 80W 120°C by blowing chlorine therein in the first step of nuclear chlorination to form a mono-nuclear chlorination product wherein the chlorine is introduced into a desired position in high yield. In case side-chain chlorination is necessary in the second stage, the chlorination at 120W140°C provides chlorobenzyl chloride, and further chlorination at 140W180°C gives chlorobenzal chloride. Thus, the chlorinated toluene derivative of formula II (m is an integer 1W3; n is 0, 1 or 2; m+n=3) can be obtained by controlling the chlorination conditions.
