Abstract
PURPOSE: To enhance stability and operating efficiency of polymerization, by breaking foam on the liquid surface by means of mechanical means, in the polymerization of a vinyl chloride monomer and in the recovery of an unreacted monomer after the polymerization.
CONSTITUTION: In the polymerization of vinyl chloride or a monomer mixture primarily composed of vinyl chloride, with addition of an aqueous medium, a dispersing agent, a polymerization initiator and other additives required, in a polymerizer, foam, formed on the liquid surface during polymerization and recovery of an unreacted monomer after the polymerization, is broken by means of mechanical means. More precisely, the foam rising from the polymerization phase is broken, by means of the shearing force of a rotating blade, or by means of a vertical motion of a disc grate having a diameter slightly smaller than the inner diameter of the polymerizer, in the gas phase zone in the polymerizer.
