Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a high-purity long-chain dicarboxylic acid, by dissolving a long chain dicarboxylic acid separated from a fermentation broth in an aqueous alkali, adding activated clay to the aqueous solution, filtering the broth under pressure, and acidifying the filtrate to separate the long-chain dicarboxylic acid.
CONSTITUTION: A microorganism capable of producing a dicarboxylic acid is incubated in a culture medium of a 10W18C straight chain hydrocarbon, e.g. n tridecane, as a substrate to give a fermentation broth, which is filtered through diatomaceous earth under pressure. The filtrate and the cake washing are mixed to separate and deposit the formed long-chain dicarboxylic acid. The separated and deposited dicarboxylic acid is dissolved in an aqueous solution of NaOH etc., and adjusted to pH about 11. Activated clay or acid clay is added to the solution, and the solution is filtered under pressure with agitation. The filtrate is then adjusted to pH≤4 to deposit the objective dicarboxylic acid of purity ≥97% with slight coloration. The dicarboxylic acid is further dissolved in an alkaline aqueous solution, and the same operations are repeated to give a white product of higher purity (99%).
