Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce ethanol in high selectivity, by the reaction of methanol and synthesis gas at a specific temperature range in an inert solvent, using a halogen- containing Co catalyst containing a chelating phosphine of a specific structure as a ligand.
CONSTITUTION: In the preparation of ethanol by the reaction of methanol with synthesis gas, the reaction is carried out at 170W250°C (especially 180W230°C) in an inert solvent such as benzene in the presence of a catalyst comprising Co, a Co compound (e.g. cobalt bromide, etc.), a chelating phosphine [e.g. 1, 1-bis (diphenylphosphino) methane, etc.] of formula [R1WR4 are aliphatic, alicyclic, or aromatic group; X is hydrocarbon residue other than 2C hydrocarbon] and at least one halogen-containing substance selected from Br, I or compounds thereof. When water is present in the reaction system (max. 50% in methanol), selectivity of ethanol can be improved.
