Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain pyrogallol from an inexpensive raw material in high yield, by oxidizing cyclohexene as a starting material with O2, purifying the reaction product, reacting the purified reaction product with water, and dehydrogenating the resultant triol compound catalytically.
CONSTITUTION: Cyclohexene expressed by formula I is oxidized in the liquid phase with O2 in the presence of a vanadium catalyst to form 2,3-epoxycyclohexan-1-ol expressed by formula II, and the vanadium catalyst is eliminated from the reaction solution. The 2,3-epoxycyclohexan-1-ol expressed by formula II is then purified and reacted with water to produce a 1,2,3-cyclohexanetriol expressed by formula III, whose aqueous solution is dehydrogenated catalytically in an inert gas atmosphere, to give the aimed compound expressed by formula IV.
