Abstract
PURPOSE: To generate the titled hydrogen without requiring operation of separating unreacted nickel from nickel sulfate hydrate by reacting a mixture of hydroiodic acid and sulfuric acid with unpowdered metallic nickel.
CONSTITUTION: Powder of metallic nickel obtd. by the thermal decomposition of nickel iodide or the reduction of nickel oxide with hydrogen is formed into unpowdered metallic nickel having a suitable shape by means of a press, a roll, etc., or the powder is sintered to a suitable shape. This unpowdered metallic nickel is put into a mixture consisting of hydrogen iodide, sulfuric acid and water, and they are reacted. Thus, hydrogen is generated in the intermediate step of a process of producing hydrogen and oxygen by the decomposition of water in a thermochemical multistage cycle using nickel, iodine and SO2 as circulating reactive substances. By this method an apparatus for separating the resulting nickel sulfate hydrate from unreacted nickel is made unnecessary.
