PURPOSE:To decrease the reduction in the degree of the pressure against the surface of a positive plate occurring when the mat is immersed in electrolyte by making the glass mat consisting of three layers to contain a given amount of a binder, and setting a specific relation of the thicknesses among the three layers. CONSTITUTION:A glass mat 1, which is pressed on the surface of a positive plate so as to prevents the active material from being separated, is made of a unified body of three layers, which are composed of a glass mat layer 2 containing 0-3wt% of a binder, and glass mat layers 3 and 3' which are placed on both sides of the layer 2 and contain 3-20wt% of the binder. The relation between thickness t of the layer 2 and thickness T of the glass mat 1 is restricted to 4T/5>=t>=T/2. As a result, the decrease in the pressure force of the mat 1 is prevented by the combination of the layer 2, which contains a small amount of the binder and has a little reduction in the pressure force even when immersed in electrolyte, and the layers 3 and 3', each of which contains a large amount of the binder and has an excellent mechanical strength but a great reduction in the pressure force when immersed in electrolyte. Consequently, the cycle life of a battery can be increased.
