Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a highly active catalyst for an oxygen electrode in a high yield by mixing a mixture of carbon powder and a silver salt with a powder of a high thermal conductivity, befdore this mixture powder is pre-reduced at a low temperature and reduced at a high reducing temperature. CONSTITUTION:An active carbon powder added with silver nitrate is mixed with the same amount as the active carbon powder of nickel powder having a larger grain diameter than the active carbon powder. Thus prepared mixture powder undergoes pre-reduction at a slightly lower temperature than the temperature (about 120 deg.C) at which the active carbon powder is explosively reduced, for example, at about 110 deg.C in either a stream of hydrogen or a stream of an inactive gas. After that, thus treated mixture powder is completely reduced at about 350 deg.C that is higher than the explosion temperature of about 120 deg.C, before the completely reduced mixture powder is cooled and is passed through a screen to make active carbon powder and nickel powder to be selected.
