Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture thermally expanded stable graphite with a high coefft. of expansion by treating graphite with an acid and/or an oxidizing agent and washing the treated graphite in water at a specified temp. to remove an excess of the acid.
CONSTITUTION: Natural graphite such as flake graphite, thermally decomposed graphite or kish graphite is treated with an acid and/or an oxidizing agent such as fuming nitric acid or concd. sulfuric acid-potassium permanganate. The treated graphite is then washed in water at 0W40°C to remove an excess of the acid on the graphite surface, and it is expanded between layers by heating to 600W1,000°C. Thus, thermally expanded stable graphite with a high coefft. of expansion is obtd. without decomposing the interlaminar compound of graphite.
