USE: Useful as guest host display for positive type, two-cycle display, etc. The compound has a wide temperature range of liquid crystal, and the addition of a liquid crystal substance and a mixture of liquid crystal makes dielectric anisotropy small, crossover frequency low, and a temperature range of liquid crystal large.
PROCESS: A compound shown by the formula II is hydrolyzed with a strong basic aqueous solution, to give a compound shown by the formula III, which is reacted with thionyl chloride to give a compound shown by the formula IV. This compound is further reacted with an alkylcyanophenol to give a compound shown by the formula I.
