Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain needlelike α-FeOOH particulate crystalline particles having a uniform particle size without contamination by dendritic particles, by the presence of a specific amount of a water-soluble stannous salt in an aqueous solution to be used for forming the needlelike α-FeOOH particles.
CONSTITUTION: In oxidizing a suspension of pH≥11 obtained by reacting an aqueous solution of a ferrous salt with an aqueous solution of an alkali with a gas containing oxygen passed therethrough, a water-soluble stannous salt in an amount of 0.1W2.0 atomic % calculated as Sn based on Fe is previously present in the aqueous solution of the alkali. Furthermore, a Ca compound in an amount of 0.1W2.0 atomic % calculated as Ca based on Fe is present in the aqueous reaction solution before passing the gas containing the oxygen. According to the method, the formation of needlelike crystalline particles from ferric ions in the reaction system can be prevented, and needlelike α-FeOOH particulate powder, having improved aspect ratio and uniform particle size without contamination by dendritic particles, and suitable for magnetic recording media, etc. can be obtained.
