PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound in high yield without preparing any by- products, by reacting a 5-pyrazolone type compound with a benzoyl chloride type compound in a specific temperature range using zinc chloride, magnesium chloride, Zn, and Mg as catalysts.
CONSTITUTION: A 1-lower alkyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone type compound is reacted with a benzoyl chloride type compound shown by the formula I (X and Y are H, halogen, or trifluoromethyl) using zinc chloride, magnesium chloride, Zn, and Mg as catalysts at ≥130°C, preferably at 160W230°C, more preferably 170W210°C, to prepare a 4-benzoylpyrazole type compound shown by the formula II (R is lower alkyl) or its metallic salt. The yield is ≥85%.
USE: A herbicide or its intermediate.
