Abstract
PURPOSE: To make it possible to carry out the titled detection rapidly, by bringing active carbon into contact with a specimen, and reacting the active carbon with the Limulus lysate.
CONSTITUTION: Active carbon is pretreated with an acid, and the resultant active carbon is free from pyrogens. The pretreated active carbon is then brought into contact with a specimen, e.g. blood, and reacted with the Limulus lysate to detect the endotoxin in the specimen. Ordinary active carbon is mostly contaminated with the endotoxin, and the active carbon is free from pyrogens by the pretreatment and preferably stored in a container for use. The method is very simple compared with the conventional treatment of the specimen with chloroform and permits the rapid test of the endotoxin even on patients in an emergency case.
